The Before & After Hair Photos You’ve Been Begging to See

So, here’s something you may or may not know about me: I’m naturally a very shy and reserved person.

I’ve learned how to fake being an extrovert and I’ve learned that I enjoy life a lot more when I don’t live in my safe little shell. However, even though I’m a blogger and have live video shows almost every day, there are lots of things I’m still incredibly awkward about sharing.

Case in point: when I posted about how much the NuMe Silhouette Straightener and Argan Oil had changed my hair you all begged and begged for me to post before and after pictures.

The very thought of taking before and after pictures was enough to terrify me. I mean, really, there are some things I’d rather not share with the world. Some things I’d rather that you never see.

The truth is, I’d like to pretend that I have my ducks more in a row than I do. I’d like for you to think that I don’t have bad hair days. I’d like for you to assume my hair really isn’t as much like straw as you could imagine that it is.

But since I’m working on being more authentic and honest and vulnerable, I figured it was high time I just step outside my comfort zone and take and post some Before and After pictures.

It’s scary for me to put this kind of stuff out on the internet… the place where you can’t really ever take back what you put out there.

But because I love you all, because so many of you begged, because I want to encourage others to step outside their comfort zones, and because I figured if I’m going to rave about a product then the pictures would speak volumes more than my words ever could, here you go…

I wasn’t kidding when I told you I was born with straw hair, was I? 🙂 {I did put on makeup, though, because I figured there should be some sort of limit to my over-sharing today. ;)}

For years, I made ponytails and buns and blobs and braids and curling my hair my go-to’s instead of wearing my hair straight because I just couldn’t figure out any way to prevent the straw look.

But all that changed thanks to the NuMe Silhouette Straightener and Argan Oil. Here’s the picture proof…

I am madly in love with this straightener and oil. Madly in love.

Because for the first time in my life, I love wearing my hair straight. I love how it looks. I love how it feels. And I love how easy it is to take care of.

How I Straighten My Hair

So many of you asked for step-by-step details on how I straighten my hair. I haven’t gotten brave enough to actually take pictures for a hair tutorial (maybe that’s the next thing I’ll try??), but I’ll give you a run-down on how I style my hair straight:

  1. Wash hair with shampoo and conditioning cream. (I only wash my hair every 4-6 days. I use this conditioning cream. A little bit goes a long way. I leave it in for about 3-5 minutes and then rinse it out.)
  2. Put about an 1/8 teaspoon of this on your hands and rub it around and then run your fingers through your wet hair.
  3. Blow dry.
  4. Put a few drops of Argan Oil on your hands and rub it around. Start from the underneath sections of your hair and run your fingers through your hair. Then smooth down the outer sections of your hair. (This prevents a greasy look.)
  5. Section off the top of your hair with a clip. Straighten the bottom half in small sections with the NuMe Straightener. Let cool before running a brush through.
  6. Then, take the clip out of the top half and straight the top half.
  7. Spray with hair spray.

The Before and After Hair Photos You've Been Begging For

All of this from start to finish (including my shower and hair-washing) takes me about 25 to 30 minutes. On the 2nd and 3rd days when I don’t wash my hair, I just do a quick straighten of my hair with the straightener (it takes me about 4 minutes to run through all my hair).

On the 4th and 5th days, I usually add a little dry shampoo to my scalp and brush it out and then I will often wear my hair up in a blob or bun since my hair is a little greasy by then and has more volume so it will stay in a bun or blob better.

It’s SO easy to do this and I LOVE how it looks. You can see a lot more pictures of it styled straight in my videos here.

My $35 ALDI Shopping Trip (+ I forgot how much I *loved* ALDI!!)

I only spent $35 and got all of these groceries!

So, want to know the honest truth? I haven’t stepped foot in ALDI for over a year. In fact, it’s probably been closer to a year and a half.

Yes, I know! That’s pretty shocking considering I’ve been SUCH a raving fan of ALDI for so long.

Jesse took over the grocery shopping when we moved to TN, so he was the one who always went to ALDI. However, as you may have noticed if you follow me on SnapChat or Facebook Live, I’ve started doing the grocery shopping and cooking and menu-planning again.

{I’ll be sharing why we made this change on Monday; I can’t wait to tell you more about that! I’m also excited because this means I’ll be bringing back the weekly menu plans, grocery shopping trips, and more cooking posts again.}

So I was so excited to go to ALDI again on Tuesday evening. It sort of felt like I was home again! 😉

And I realized just how much I had missed shopping there and how many fond memories I have of shopping there and all the great deals we’ve gotten over the years. I feel like I owe an eternal debt of gratitude to ALDI for all the money that they’ve saved us and how they’ve allowed us to keep our grocery budget low.

Aldi & Why I Love the Store So Much!

Here are two things I was especially thrilled to find when I went to ALDI:

1. I was so impressed with their new Organic & Natural selections.

They’ve really upped their game when it comes to natural and organic products. I knew they had introduced a number of new organic and natural products, but I was really surprised at just how many new organic products they had!

I got Whole Wheat tortillas for $1.39 and 4 pounds of Pure Cane Sugar for just $2.59!!

2. I was completely blown away by how low their prices still are.

I know that I’ve sung the praises of ALDI’s low prices for forever, but I guess that you still have reverse sticker shock when you go in there! I mean, where else can you get eggs for $0.49 per dozen!!! (Yes, for real! I couldn’t believe that price, either!)

A few of the prices had gone up a little, but by and large, the prices were just as amazing as ever… and some were even lower than I remember!

I only spent $35 at Aldi & got all of these groceries!

What I Bought for $35 at ALDI

  • Crispy Oat cereal — $1.19
  • Honey Nut Oat cereal — $1.19

My Completely Honest Experience With Rocksbox

My Completely Honest Review of Rocksbox
I recently had the opportunity to try out Rocksbox — a jewelry membership service dedicated to making your life easier and more stylish. Their goal is to make accessorizing with jewelry fun again.

As someone who likes to look nice and presentable, but who is by no means a fashionista, I wasn’t sure what I’d think of this service. It seemed a little quirky (renting jewelry?? Who does that?!) and expensive to me (I’m all about buying jewelry for $3 off the clearance rack at Kohl’s!).

However, because I’ve seen this advertised multiple places and because I know that you all enjoy it when I try out services and write completely honest reviews, I decided to go for it and then give you an really truthful look at my experience.

My Completely Honest Review of Rocksbox

How Rocksbox Works

1. Sign up for a Rocksbox account. (If you use coupon code moneysavingmomxoxo at checkout, you’ll get your first month entirely FREE!)

2. Answer a few questions about your likes and dislikes. For instance, I said that I mostly wear silver jewelry and don’t want them to send me rings (because I only wear two ever — my wedding ring and a 10-year anniversary ring).

3. Add pieces to your Wish List. This is a way for your stylist to get a better idea of your likes and dislikes. They recommend that you add at least 15 pieces to your Wish List. Your stylist will do their best to choose at least one piece from your Wish List to include in your box. Rocksbox sets are curated for you based on your Style Profile and your Wish List.

4. Within a week or so, you’ll receive a box of jewelry. Your box will contain three different pieces of jewelry. You can keep this box of jewelry for as long as you like.

5. When you’re ready for a new box of jewelry, just ship the current box back. Within another week or so, you’ll receive another box of jewelry. (Note: Be sure to ship all the pieces back. If you keep a piece, you will be billed for it as that signifies to them that you wanted to purchase it.)

6. You can keep and wear your Rocksbox pieces for as long as you like. You can return your box anytime, as often as you like, and we'll send out a new set right away. You pay the same monthly membership fee $19/month) regardless of how often you exchange your box.

7. You can purchase any of the jewelry you receive at a discounted price. You’ll get a $10 Shine credit every month that you can use toward the purchase of the jewelry. This credit does not roll over each month.

Tips For Making the Most of Rocksbox

Be sure to add jewelry to your Wish List. I added 15 pieces of jewelry to my Wish List before I got my first box. My stylist chose the bracelet I had picked out and created a set of jewelry around that. Once I saw what was in my first box and fell in love with the Kendra Scott earrings, I added quite a few more Kendra Scott items to my Wish List for future boxes.

Be sure to keep the original box that your jewelry comes in. I found that putting the jewelry straight back into the cute little box when I wasn’t wearing it was the safest way to make sure it didn’t get lost or broken.*

My Completely Honest Review of Rocksbox

Be sure to leave feedback for your stylist. Just like Stitch Fix, stylists depend upon your feedback to make your future boxes as tailored to your style as possible. Once you receive your box of jewelry and wear the jewelry, be sure to log onto Rocksbox and share your feedback on the pieces you were sent so your stylist can get to know what you like and dislike.

*Note: In case you’re wondering what happens if you damage a piece of jewelry, here’s what their site says: Your membership includes a small insurance fee, which covers normal wear for all products. If there is slight damage or wear (e.g. lost earring back, a stone falls out, etc.) this is fully covered. However, we will evaluate the damage when it is returned to the warehouse, as excessive damage is not covered. If you have any damage or loss issues, don’t worry, but please email us immediately at members@rocksbox.com.

Pros of Rocksbox

You can get the first month FREE! Get an absolutely FREE month when you sign up at Rocksbox and use my code moneysavingmomxoxo. Just please put a reminder on your calendar to cancel the subscription before the 4 weeks is up in case you decide it's not for you. I'd hate for you to get charged for something when you expected it to be free!

It’s great for people who need to be on camera or stages every week. If you’re someone who does a lot of video or media or public speaking, this might be a great option for you. For just $19 per month, you can get new jewelry to change up your look on a regular basis — without needing to go out and go shopping for jewelry. I love how jewelry can transform the look of outfits!

My Completely Honest Review of Rocksbox

It gives you the opportunity to try new looks and styles. I absolutely adore this new bracelet I got in my first Rocksbox. I never would have thought I would like this style, but I really do! I also really liked the Kendra Scott earrings they sent in my box (see below).

The stylist helps you know what looks go together. Okay, so here’s my real-life confession: I often struggle to know what jewelry goes together. I always wonder if I’m breaking “The Jewelry Rules” when I pull together a bracelet, earring, and necklace combination that didn’t come packaged together. I love that my stylist told me that I could wear the three pieces she sent together. It was like, “Finally! Someone is telling me that I’m not breaking any rules or forever branding myself as a non-fashionista if I wear these three things together!!” 🙂

Cons of Rocksbox

It’s expensive. You knew I was going to say this, didn’t you?? 😉 As someone who usually gets her jewelry from the clearance racks at Kohl’s and Versona and who tries to pay less than $5 for every piece of jewelry, the thought of paying $19 per month to rent jewelry is just, well, a LOT of money.

Other people wore the jewelry. This might not seem weird to you, but for me, it was a little weird to think that I’m wearing jewelry that there’s a good chance someone else wore. They say that it’s sanitized and it looked brand-new to me, but still.

Screenshot 2016-07-28 15.46.27

You might break or lose it. This is probably one of my biggest hesitations for this service. As a mom of kids, stuff breaks at our house. It’s just inevitable. And I had to be extra careful to make sure I put all the jewelry straight back into the box it came in so I wouldn’t break or lose it and then get charged for it.

You can’t use your credit toward your membership. This might not be something you care about, but I always look at the referral programs that companies offer. Rocksbox does offer a referral program — you can get a $25 credit for every friend you refer who signs up. However, they limit the number of referrals to 3 per month. Also, you can’t use the credit toward membership. The credit can only be used toward jewelry purchases.
